We speak a lot about the choices breeders make. Many think breeding dogs is just all too easy,,,,, you get a boy dog and a girl dog make a litter of cute colourful puppies and tadaaaaa you are a breeder.
In a way this is true. Breed one litter and you are a breeder. Disregard terms like hobby breeder or backyard breeder or just breeding so family can see a puppy... no matter,,, you ARE a breeder.
Let us explain though,,,, there are breeders, there are breeders and there are breeders.
Puppy mills are breeders, a family breeding a pet with no papers to a cute dog down the road are breeders and people showing and testing all their dogs are breeders,,,, our task is to teach YOU,,, Joe Public and Mrs. Public, puppy buyers,,, to see the difference.
No-one can change breeders. They feel it is no-one's business what they do,, it is their "right" to breed THEIR dogs. I submit it is YOUR right to select the best puppy from the best breeder. I submit that it is the dog's right to be treated the best it possibly can... to be bred to only great stock....., purebred, tested, from proven lines, healthy lines.... PROVEN healthy lines.
Puppy mills have one incentive,, CASH MONEY,,,,,again,,, One Incentive,,, CASH MONEY. That is the one and ONLY reason they breed. They do not want Mr. and Mrs. Public to have the best and healthiest dog,,, they want the Public family to part with hard earned cash,,,, THE END. They are happy,,, how Mr. and Mrs. Public feel is of no consequence. How the puppy is?,, who cares?.... They have their money and you have your puppy.... end of story.
This sounds shocking,,,, but remember you bought your dog at a market, a car park, on the side of the road,,,,,, did you even get a name,,, no,,, you got a bargain. You were thrilled,,,, How dumb was that breeder that told you that a good dog is $600.00,,,, you found one for $75.00 ,, a great deal,,,, Gees it is only a dog,,,, $600.00.... who are they trying to fool.
Fast forward a month.... your dog is sick.. you take it to a vet,,,, your vet asks where you got your baby,,,, "on the highway,,, on the grass near that stop and get it".
Vet. "Has it had shots"?
You. "dunno".
Vet. "Has it been wormed?"
You "dunno"
Vet "What was the breeder's name"?
You. "dunno"
Vet. "I see,,,, we have a dog whose age you do not know, medical history you do not know, from a breeder you do not know"????
Let's see you now say,,, "BUT we only paid $75.00".....
Now you will see this "bargain" cost you heaps.... IF it lives. You can pay a breeder money for a good dog or pay a vet money for a bad dog.
Backtrack... the $600.00 dog,,,, It was 12 weeks old,,, with UKCand AKC papers,,, it had three vaccines,, a 5 way at 6 weeks, a 9 way at 9 and 12 weeks. It had been wormed at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks,,,,,, it had a rabies shot at 12 weeks. It had a microchip and that chip was registered. The breeder put that chip in your name and his,, so if you could not be found,, the breeders would get your lost dog for you. The breeder had your pet dog altered before you picked them up,,, so you would NEVER have unwanted or accidental puppies.
You went to the breeder's house.. you seen the parents, other litter mates,, other dogs. The breeder gave you links to testing,,, showing you parents, grand parents and other dogs testing results.... all online for ALL to see..
Which puppy now is a bargain?... The healthy one in your lap,,, or the one at the vets racking up a bill you can not jump over.
This is our point about breeders,,,,, there are indeed breeders,,, trying ti improve the breed looks wise and health wise,,,, testing, showing and feeding good feed. And,,,, There are people that make puppies to sell.
Read this little scenario again,,,, and research breeders,,,, ASK QUESTIONS..... this is YOUR money,, you are allowed to ask questions and expect answers.
If a bargain seems too good to be true,, it usually is.
